Why Support KLRU

Why does KLRU need to raise money?

KLRU is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization registered in the State of Texas. To support our mission and commitment to the people of Central Texas, KLRU must raise funds to pay for programs, broadcast equipment, staff and operating expenses. Over 50% of KLRU’s annual financial support comes from individual members — viewers like you who understand that their contributions enable KLRU to fulfill its mission

Why does KLRU have so many fundraising drives?

In order to continue to provide the service of broadcasting the PBS and local programs that educate, inspire, reflect, and entertain Central Texans, we rely on a variety of fundraising activities. One of the most effective of these activities is using our own broadcast air to encourage viewers to become members and to remind members to renew their support to help pay for the service we provide.

Traditionally KLRU has holds four pledge drives during the year, in March, June, August and December. KLRU has been pleased to shorten the June pledge programming to one week, focusing our fundraising efforts on core PBS programming during the past 4 years. Increased support in the summer months has encouraged us to keep our regularly scheduled programming running through the summer months.

Does KLRU receive tax money, if so, why is it so important that I donate money to become a member?

KLRU does not directly receive money from your taxes. When public broadcasting began operations the federal government created the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). The CPB receives appropriations from the federal government marked to support local television stations, programming and improvements to the public broadcasting system as a whole. KLRU applies for funds to this organization every year and adheres to the guidelines established by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in order to continue to receive their support and continue affiliation with PBS. Distribution from CPB is determined by market size.

KLRU receives approximately 14 percent of our annual budget from the CPB. This however leaves 86 percent of our budget to be acquired through fundraising techniques, and membership is the largest single source of revenue for this station and many others. Without the support of members, public broadcasting, in all its’ forms, would simply not exist. Additionally, local support is important for more than just the dollars needed to run the station; it provides a critical relationship between the station and the community we serve.

How do I become a member or renew my membership?

Become a member or renew your membership today by joining online or contribute by mail to PO Box 7158, Austin TX 78713. Memberships are active for 12 months and as you approach the end of your membership you will receive reminders to renew your membership for an upcoming year, unless you are a monthly member. 

Can I pay my membership in monthly installments?

Yes! We have several Sustaining Membership options. Go paperless with our Green Membership, monthly giving at the level of your choice starting at $5/month. Support KLRU as a family when you join our Explorers Membership for $7/month. Discover the arts in Austin when you join our Creatives Membership at $10/month. All Sustaining Memberships have the option to be setup on your credit card or drafted from your bank account. Tax receipts and annual giving summaries are mailed in January.

Is my gift to KLRU tax deductible?

Contributions to KLRU are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law, minus the fair market value of any thank-you gifts received. The fair market value of the gifts you received is listed on the acknowledgement letter you received at the time of your donation - or, if you give monthly - on your annual tax receipt that we send in January.

How do I find out if my company has a matching gift program?

Contact your Human Resources office. Many employers share your commitment to public television and will show it by doubling your pledge of support. Visit our Corporate Supporters page for a partial list of employers who participate in matching employee charitable gifts.

Can I donate stock to KLRU?

Yes. Contact us, and we will send you the necessary paperwork.

Who should I contact if I have questions about my monthly bill, payment or charges to my credit card?

Why am I receiving duplicate communications from KLRU?

You may have a duplicate record in our membership database. Contact us to let us know you are receiving duplicate mailings and we will correct the error.

 

Membership Renewal Information

I just sent you my renewal check. Why did I receive another renewal form?

We print and send out renewal notices in bulk. This means we prepare our renewal mailings a week to 10 days before you receive a renewal form. As a result, your renewal payment and our notice may have crossed in the mail. Please disregard any renewal letters you may receive in the month after you make a gift.

I am a current member. Why are you sending me renewal notices months prior to my membership expiration date?

You begin receiving renewal notices three months prior to your actual expiration. Renewing early saves KLRU the added cost of sending additional reminders. To assist you in budgeting for your gifts to KLRU, we want to alert you well in advance of your renewal date. Renewal requests are also one way that we communicate to our members about the importance of member support.

If I make a contribution before my membership expires, will it be renewed?

If your contribution is received by KLRU within three months of your expiration date, it is considered a “renewal,” thereby adding another year to your membership. If the gift is received more than three months prior, the contribution is considered an “additional gift.”

 

Privacy Information

Does KLRU exchange my mailing address or email address?

No. By providing your mailing and email addresses to KLRU you allow us to communicate with you about programming, events, and station activities. We never share your contact information with other organizations.

Is it safe to use my credit card at klru.org?

KLRU uses the best encryption technology and software available for secure online transactions. The personal and financial information you send to us, including credit card number, name and address, are encrypted so that it cannot be read when you are viewing the donation page or when you submit the information.

 

Thank You Gift Information

When will I receive my thank you gift?

You will receive your thank you gift 3-5 weeks after you fulfill your pledge. We order thank you gifts weekly throughout the year; however, national demand for an item may slow down our distributors and cause delays in our ability to mail your thank you gift. If it has been longer than 4-6 weeks and you have not received your thank you gift, contact us for the status.

Why are the thank you gifts KLRU offers during pledge drives so expensive? Why can’t I buy these items at a regular retail price?

As a public television station, KLRU relies on community support for a great deal of our funding. The items we offer during our on-air fundraising campaigns are intended as a “thank you” gift for supporting the station with a donation, not as a retail transaction. To encourage viewers to become members of the station, we suggest various pledge levels and offer the individual items or packages as incentives to contribute at that level. These items allow us to give members something tangible for their donation in support of our programming.

What do I do if I receive the wrong gift or a damaged thank-you gift?

If you open your gift and discover that it is the wrong item or is damaged, re-pack it and mark the package “Return to Sender.” Contact us to receive a replacement.
