Chicago’s “Mayor for Life” Richard M. Daley was elected in 1989, and re-elected in 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007. Daley is the longest-serving mayor in the history of Chicago, following his father, Richard J. Daley, who served from 1955 to 1976. Before becoming mayor, Richard M. Daley served in the Illinois State Senate and as the Cook County State’s Attorney. Daley decided against running for a seventh term in 2011 and was succeeded by Rahm Emanuel. As mayor, Daley promoted the city’s business, tourism, and culinary and art industries in a way to compete with bigger American cities, such as New York. He now serves as Executive Chairman to Tur Partners, a global business investment and advisory firm.
