Please join KLRU as Evan Smith interviews singer-songwriter Chely Wright for a taping of Overheard With Evan Smith on Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 7 pm. Doors open at 6:30 pm.
Wright began writing songs as a teenager in Kansas – a hobby that led to hit songs and numerous awards, including the Academy of Country Music Award for Best New Female Vocalist in 1995. Wright built a successful career as a musician in Nashville. Then in 2010 she launched a parallel career as an author and activist, publishing a memoir titled Like Me, coming out as the first openly gay country music star and founding The Like Me Organization to support the LGBT community. Wright’s seventh album, Lifted off the Ground, was released in conjunction with her memoir and explores many of the issues discussed in the book. Wright is in Austin to receive an award from Atticus Circle.
